Life Insurance: Protecting the People You Love
September is Life Insurance Awareness Month—a good reminder to ask one important question:
If something happened to me, would the people I love be financially protected?
Life insurance is not something most people enjoy thinking about. However, having the right coverage can make a difficult time a little easier for your family.
What can life insurance help cover?
Life insurance can provide money to help your loved ones:
- Replace lost income
- Pay the mortgage or rent
- Cover everyday household expenses
- Pay outstanding debts
- Cover funeral and final expenses
- Continue a child’s education
- Protect a family business
- Leave a financial legacy
Life insurance is not only for the primary income earner. A stay-at-home parent or caregiver also provides valuable services that could be expensive to replace.
When should you consider life insurance?
You may need life insurance if someone depends on you financially. It is especially important to review your coverage after major life changes, including:
- Getting married or divorced
- Having or adopting a child
- Buying a home
- Starting or growing a business
- Changing jobs
- Taking on additional debt
- Preparing for retirement
Your life insurance needs can change over time, so an older policy may no longer provide enough protection—or may have beneficiaries who need to be updated.
Don’t wait until “someday”
Many people delay purchasing life insurance because they believe it will be too expensive or complicated. In many cases, coverage may be more affordable than expected—especially when you apply while you are younger and healthier.
The right amount and type of coverage will depend on your family, income, debts, goals, age, health, and budget. That is why it is important to review your individual needs instead of choosing a policy based only on price.
